The Summer Singers of Atlanta was formed in 1990 as one of the initial
projects of the William Baker Choral Foundation. The first chorus registered
95 singers, and interest has grown steadily over the years to a high of
175 registrants for the Summer Singers' 1999 performance of Mozart's Requiem.
In its first eighteen seasons, the Summer Singers has performed a strong
representation of choral/orchestral masterworks. Highlights have included
Schubert's Mass in G, Mozart's Requiem, Coronation Mass
and Solemn Vespers, Handel's Coronation Anthems, Robert
Ray's Gospel Mass, Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem and Liebeslieder
Waltzes, Thomson's Frostiana and The Testament of Freedom,
Vivaldi's Gloria and a wide variety of sacred and secular music
from all periods. During the 1996 year of Atlanta's Centennial Olympic
Games, the Summer Singers performed a concert of international celebration
that featured 12 different languages. The Summer Singers concept has been so successful that it has been imitated in Atlanta and other cities across the nation. Yet, the Summer Singers of Atlanta remains America's original and perhaps best summer chorus.
For their nineteenth summer of singing, the 2008 Summer Singers of Atlanta will join with
chamber orchestra to present Mozart’s beautifully crafted Mass in C minor, along with a variety
of classical works and folks songs. The Summer Singers of Atlanta will be joined by
professional chamber orchestra for the performances. Performances will be Sunday, August 10,
and Monday, August 11. Rehearsals will be Monday evenings, 7:00-9:30, beginning June 2. All
rehearsals and performances will be in the stunningly beautiful sanctuary of Peachtree Christian
Church, Peachtree at Spring Streets in Midtown Atlanta.
