Baroque Summer Institute
(formerly Cobb Summer Singers)
The Baroque Summer Institute constitutes a new format for our summer choruses. From the first rehearsal to the final concert, the entire season of the Baroque Summer Institute will occur within 30 days. It is the perfect solution for singer s who wish to participate in a summer chorus, but prefer a shorter season. The BSI will perform works by Baroque composers such as Bach, Buxtehude, Vivaldi, Handel, Telemann and many others with distinguished soloists and full orchestra. Just like the former Cobb Summer Singers, the Baroque Summer Institute will open to all adult and mature youth singers without audition.
The Cobb Summer Singers was founded in 2006 by Lynn Swanson. After participating in the 2005 Summer Singers of Atlanta under the direction of Dr. William Baker, Ms. Swanson made the decision to create a new ensemble on the same model based in Cobb County. The project was an immediate success with more than 55 singers joining for the first season to perform acclaimed concerts of classics and spirituals before capacity audiences.
In early 2009 the Cobb Summer Singers became a constituent ensemble of the William Baker Choral Foundation. As a result of the support of the Choral Foundation, the 100-voice Cobb Summer Singers has grown dramatically in artistic accomplishment and enrollment. Recent performances have included Handel: Israel in Egypt, Coronation Anthems and Dettingen Te Deum, Mozart: Solemn Vespers, Schubert Mass in G, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Brahms: A German Requiem, and Beethoven Mass in C.
Beginning with the summer of 2017 the chorus has a new name as the Baroque Summer Institute and a new format contained within 30 days.
