The summer-only chorus of 150 voices begins rehearsals in early June each year and holds 8-10 rehearsals in a fun workshop setting with emphasis on experiential learning. The repertoire usually includes a popular major work performed with guest soloists and professional orchestra, along with a wide diversity of sacred and secular choral classics, modern selections, spirituals and gospel songs. The first nine seasons of the Summer Singers of Kansas City have been a great success, with singers attracted from as far away as Topeka, Garden City, Ottawa and St. Joseph. Repertoire has included Schubert's Mass in G, Vivaldi's Gloria, Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem and Mozart's Requiem, Solemn Vespers and Missa Brevis in D, K-194, along with classic works by Brahms, Haydn, Beethoven, and Gretchaninoff, modern works by Lloyd Pfautsch, Mark Gresham, Norman Dello Joio, Randall Thompson and Carolyn Jennings, along with the spirituals and gospel songs for which Foundation ensembles are known. For their Tenth Anniversary Summer of Singing, the 2008 Summer Singers of Kansas City will
present two distinct concerts of wonderful music. On Sunday, August 17, the Summer Singers of
Kansas City will join with professional orchestra and soloists for the choral experience of a
lifetime, a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, the glorious “Ode to Joy.”
On Monday, August 18, the Summer Singers will celebrate their choral heritage as the 2008
chorus, joined by alumni singers and member soloists, perform a variety of classics, Broadway
tunes, folk songs, secular works and spirituals in a grand and varied concert celebration. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings, 7:00-9:30, beginning June 3. Performances will be Sunday,
